The BA Photography department of the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) is currently looking for a

Study Coach

Vacancy number: 25-019

What will you do
Studying in the Photography department is a rich and sometimes challenging experience. While students develop their skills and prepare for the professional field, they also draw on personal experiences that inspire their work. In the process of discovering themselves both as artists and individuals, they may encounter challenges rooted in their past or present.

As a study coach you help the students to navigate their studies and are you a first point of contact when they encounter difficulties. Your role is to empower students so they can make the most of their studies. This includes supporting the student in developing study skills, as well as mental-emotional, social and communication skills. It is your task as a study coach to create a trustworthy space where both successes and setbacks become stepping stones for growth.

Together with the student you examine what is needed to move forward in their study and provide them with the tools to do so. As part of your role, you monitor and help students maintain an overview of their study progress and study career. You address motivation issues or potential study delays. When needed, you provide support for mental-emotional issues such as stress and fear of failure. In cases of exceptional or health-related circumstances, you advise the head of the department and student counsellor on adjusted study plans. Study coaches also address group dynamics within student classes, helping to foster cohesion, effective collaboration, and respect for different perspectives.

Working within the department, you’ll understand the specific demands of the curriculum, allowing you to guide students effectively. You’ll conduct both individual and group sessions, supporting students while maintaining strong connections with teachers and staff. Your role goes beyond traditional academic support – you’ll help students tap into their authentic selves while preparing them for the realities of their chosen field.

Profile:

  • You have experience in or affinity with the professional field of art and/or design in higher (arts) education;
  • Expertise in the field of study career guidance;
  • Strong organisational, interpersonal, and communication skills, with an empathetic, respectful, and responsible approach;
  • Ability to comfortably engage with diverse cultural and social backgrounds of an international student community;
  • Ability to coach students individually and in interactive group sessions;
  • Skills to motivate and reflect on students’ learning processes;
  • Ability to work both independently and in close collaboration with educational departments and other study coaches and with student counsellor, heads of departments, coordinators, teachers, and other professionals at the KABK to support student well-being;
  • Awareness of personal limits and timely referral when necessary;
  • Self-reflective and open to discuss complicated work-related dilemmas with colleagues;
  • Continuously strives for improvement of your own coaching competencies, pedagogical skills and self-knowledge through training and (peer-) supervision.

What do we offer
KABK offers you an international and inspiring working environment and informal working culture. You will work closely with a remarkable group of students, dedicated teachers and two other study coaches. You will be part of a team that is helping develop the vision and execution of study coaching at this department. Regular peer supervision meetings will help you to stay in sync and develop professional and personal growth. We provide space for you to explore and develop your ideas and future visions in a supporting and dynamic environment. Within the department there is room for your own skills and viewpoints to contribute to the work that we are doing together.

At first we offer a fixed-term contract for one-year, with the perspective a permanent appointment after two-year contracts.
