The Academy of Theatre and Dance (ATD) is an educational institution at higher professional education level with 12 Bachelor’s programmes, three Master’s programmes and one associate degree programme, as well as two preparatory courses, in the fields of theatre and dance. All study programmes are connected with the professional practice, both nationally and internationally, which together form a learning community.
Students are trained to be actors, mime artists, dancers, choreographers, theatre or dance teachers, for example, as well as directors, scenographers, technical designers, stagehands, production managers and creative producers.
The Academy of Theatre and Dance forms part of the Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK), which also includes the Breitner Academy, the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, the Netherlands Film Academy, the Reinwardt Academy and the Academy of Architecture.
About the Expanded Contemporary Dance (ECD) programme
The Bachelor’s in Expanded Contemporary Dance (ECD) is a 4-year
programme that prepares young dancers for a career in the Netherlands and abroad. The students develop their own unique talent in a varied programme. ECD explores the relationship between social, urban and non-Western dance styles, and the European and American tradition of dance theatre.
The ECD programme has existed for 6 years. There is a robust curriculum, as well as an enthusiastic and committed teaching staff. Certain learning trajectories can now be expanded on further. In addition, steps can be taken in terms of teaching processes, guaranteeing quality and internal communication.
For the four-year Bachelor’s programme in Expanded Contemporary Dance (ECD), the Academy of Theatre and Dance (ATD) is looking for an:
Artistic Director ECD
0,8 fte
On the basis of a clear vision on arts education, you will lead the team of (guest) teachers, who also largely work in the professional practice. Together, you will work on the further development of a progressive and ambitious curriculum that ties in with contemporary professional field, society and new generations of students. In addition, you will work together closely with colleagues from the other study programmes within the Academy of Theatre and Dance. You will seek connections between practice, research and reflection, and you will facilitate the exchange between Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes.
Diversity, inclusion and social safety are key areas within the policy of the Academy.
What will you do?
- In collaboration with the team, you will develop the educational profile with a focus on teaching, the professional field and diversity & inclusion.
- You will be responsible for (and safeguard) the quality of education and improve this through evaluations.
- You will maintain intensive contact with the professional field for the development and quality of the study programme.
- You will be responsible for managing student selection, assessments, internship policy and graduation.
- You will ensure there is a relevant curriculum that is tailored to the developments and requirements of the professional practice.
- You will be responsible for the budget and the implementation of the staff policy.
- You will be responsible for the management and correct composition of the teaching staff, and will work together with other artistic directors.
- You will preferably teach in a related field of study.
- You will report to the Academy management.
What do you bring to the table?
- You have in-depth knowledge of the dance field and contemporary dance practice, with an eye for the unique position of dance in Dutch and international theatre.
- You have leadership experience and can lead and support a diverse team in an exclusive work climate.
- You have a clear vision on the artistic practice/profession of the dancer. Please provide a brief description of this in your application letter.
- You possess educational knowledge and experience (preferably in higher professional arts education), and have didactic and pedagogical skills to create a safe learning environment. Obtaining a basic teaching qualification, if you do not already have this yet, is mandatory.
- You enjoy guiding teachers and students in their artistic development.
- You have a network within the Netherlands and abroad, which you can use to support the study programme.
- You can speak and write in Dutch and English, and have organisational, administrative and IT skills.
What we offer
The Academy of Theatre and Dance offers a pleasant working environment in a modern building designed for theatre and dance education, which is located in the centre of Amsterdam. The AHK offers attractive terms of employment in accordance with the Collective Agreement for Universities of Applied Sciences (cao-hbo), such as a year-end bonus of 8.3%, an ABP pension scheme, a generous holiday entitlement, a good travel allowance and opportunities for study. The position is assigned to salary scale 13, (maximum € 7,495.89 gross per month in the case of a full-time appointment). Assignment to the salary scale is partly dependent on education and experience. Homeworking facilities are made available, where necessary. In the first instance, we will offer you an employment contract for a year with the possibility of an extension following a positive performance review at the end of the first year.
Submission of a Certificate of Conduct (Verklaring Omtrent Gedrag, VOG) is required on commencing employment.
An assessment may form part of the procedure.

ECD verkent de relatie tussen social, urban en niet-westerse dansstijlen en de Europese en Amerikaanse traditie van theaterdans. De ECD Opleiding bestaat nu 6 jaar. Er staat een stevig curriculum en een enthousiast en betrokken docententeam. Bepaalde leerlijnen kunnen nu verder worden verdiept. Daarnaast zijn er stappen te zetten op het gebied van onderwijsprocessen, de borging van kwaliteit en de interne communicatie.

Vanuit een heldere visie op kunstvakonderwijs geef je leiding aan het team van (gast)docenten, die voor een groot deel ook werkzaam zijn in de beroepspraktijk. Samen werken jullie aan de verdere ontwikkeling van een vooruitstrevend en ambitieus curriculum dat aansluit op het hedendaags werkveld, de maatschappij en nieuwe generaties studenten. Daarnaast werk je binnen de Academie voor Theater en Dans nauw samen met collega’s van de andere opleidingen. Je zoekt verbindingen tussen praktijk, onderzoek en reflectie en maakt de uitwisseling tussen bachelors en tussen bachelors en masters mogelijk. Diversiteit, inclusie en sociale veiligheid zijn belangrijke speerpunten binnen het beleid van de academie.
Wat ga je doen?
- Je ontwikkelt in samenwerking met het team het opleidingsprofiel met focus op onderwijs, werkveld en diversiteit &inclusie.
- Je bent verantwoordelijk voor (en waarborgt) de onderwijskwaliteit en verbetert deze met evaluaties.
- Je onderhoudt intensief contact met het werkveld voor de ontwikkeling en kwaliteit van de opleiding.
- Je bent verantwoordelijk voor het beheer van de studentenselectie, beoordelingen, stagebeleid en afstuderen.
- Je zorgt voor een relevant curriculum dat is afgestemd op de ontwikkelingen en eisen van de beroepspraktijk.
- Je bent verantwoordelijk voor het budget en de uitvoering van het personeelsbeleid.
- Je bent verantwoordelijk voor de aansturing en juiste samenstelling van het docententeam en werkt samen met andere artistiek leiders.
- Je geeft bij voorkeur les in een gerelateerd vakgebied.
- Je rapporteert aan de academiedirectie.
Wat neem je mee?
- Je hebt diepgaande kennis van het dans vakgebied en de hedendaagse dans praktijk, met oog voor de unieke positie van dans in het (inter)nationale theater.
- Je hebt leiderschapservaring en kunt een divers team aansturen en ondersteunen in een inclusief werkklimaat.
- Je hebt een heldere visie op het kunstenaarschap/vak van danser. Graag een beknopte omschrijving in je sollicitatiebrief.
- Je beschikt over onderwijskennis en ervaring (bij voorkeur in het hbo kunstonderwijs) en hebt didactische en pedagogische vaardigheden om een veilige leeromgeving te creëren. Het behalen van een basisbevoegdheid didactische bekwaamheid is, als je deze nog niet bezit, verplicht.
- Je begeleidt graag docenten en studenten in hun artistieke ontwikkeling.
- Je hebt een (inter)nationaal netwerk ter ondersteuning van de opleiding.
- Je spreekt en schrijft Nederlands en Engels en hebt organisatorische, administratieve en IT-vaardigheden.
Dit bieden wij
De Academie voor Theater en Dans biedt een prettige werkkring in een modern, voor theater- en dansonderwijs ontworpen gebouw, centraal gelegen in Amsterdam. De AHK biedt aantrekkelijke arbeidsvoorwaarden volgens de cao-hbo zoals een eindejaarsuitkering van 8,3%, een ABP-pensioenregeling, een ruime vakantieregeling, goede reiskostenvergoeding en studiemogelijkheden. De functie is ingeschaald in schaal 13 (maximaal € 7495,89 bruto per maand bij een fulltimeaanstelling). Inschaling is mede afhankelijk van opleiding en ervaring. Thuiswerkfaciliteiten worden waar nodig ter beschikking gesteld. Wij bieden je in eerste instantie een dienstverband voor een jaar, met uitzicht op een verlenging na een positief functioneringsgesprek aan het eind van het eerste jaar.
Het aanleveren van een Verklaring Omtrent Gedrag (VOG) is vereist bij indiensttreding.
Een assessment kan deel uitmaken van de procedure.
