In the heart of the Vrije Universiteit’s new campus area at Amsterdam’s Zuidas, Filmtheater Rialto and cultural centre VU Griffioen operate a special cultural hot-spot with a cinema, theatre and gallery. With its own theatre café Bar Boele, situated in the plinth of the impressive modern university building on the Boelelaan. Bar Boele is the living room of the VU campus and the hang-out for theatre and film-goers. Where there is also room for performances, exhibitions, festivals and other special programs.

Horeca Manager (in training)

(Dutch and/or English speaking)
24 to 32 hours per week

What do you bring?
You have work experience in the hospitality industry and the ambition to grow further in this beautiful profession. You move easily among people and enjoy making them feel at home. You are strong in communication, work efficiently and enjoy organizing while getting things done. Affinity with film, food, theatre and student life is a plus.

In training
Together with the Bar Boele team, we will train you to become the Manager of the theatre café. We will give you the tools and guidance of an experienced manager to develop successfully. For yourself and for Bar Boele. Where you start with 24 hours, these hours are gradually extended.

What is there for you to do?

  • Building and fine tuning a young and enthusiastic team of about 15 Dutch and international employees in the theatre cafe. A team that likes to please guests and entice them to keep coming back. Part of the team already has quite some experience, part is also relatively inexperienced.
  • Together with the current manager (16 hours per week), you will lead the barteam, supported by two shift leaders. Gradually, you will take over the manager’s tasks.
  • You are the person of contact for users of the theatre café: cultural visitors, students, local residents, employees of the university and companies in the Zuidas.
  • You pay attention to quality, you are pennywise, and you see or invent opportunities.
  • You take care of the basic administration of Bar Boele – supported by a specialized company – and maintain relationship management with current and future suppliers.
  • You will continue to build on the current range of drinks, snacks and bar food. In regard of Bar Boele you easily respond to trends and customer needs.
  • You take care of the sales and organization of rentals and catering for Rialto and Griffioen and third parties and maintain point of contact with the various catering companies.
  • You think along with the people of Rialto and Griffioen about promotion and activities which increase turnover.
  • You know the importance of hygiene in a tidy and well organized kitchen. You already have the diplomas HACCP, BHV and Social Hygiene or we will make sure you can obtain them quickly. You will also receive a targeted study budget.
  • You know what is required in the hospitality industry and find it natural to work evening and weekend hours.
  • You will develop into a Mrs. or Mr. Bar Boele and thus be responsible for the ins and outs of the theatre cafe and know how to make it a successful hospitality business. This includes standing behind the bar yourself and participating in the tasks of the colleagues you manage.

Employment conditions
Salary and terms of employment are in accordance with the Horeca CLA or better. The salary indication based on full-time is between € 2600,- and € 3000,- gross per month, excluding 8% holiday allowance. Depending on your experience, you will start in scale 6 and can grow to scale 7.

Appointment for one year with a one-month probationary period and expressly the possibility of extension for an indefinite period.
