Willem de Kooning Academie: Education Manager

The Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam is looking for an Education Manager for 1.0 FTE | Vacancy for a Paid position, Full-time | Deadline: 31-10-2021

The WdKA stands for groundbreaking art education, fostering relationships with social and educational partners who add substance to an academy that constantly challenges its own boundaries. In addition to art education, the WdKA offers teacher training in the arts and economic education aimed at entrepreneurship in the creative industry.

The mission and vision of the WdKA are geared towards developing new views on the relevance of the artist, designer, educator or producer. Crossing the border between disciplines (artistic and scientific) is the starting point. The curriculum is founded in an interdisciplinary ethos through the Autonomous, Social, and Commercial Practices. In the Bachelor programs the Major studies are the entry point for all Bachelor students. Further on, the Practices provide the interdisciplinary research contexts in the graduation phase. The highly unique Stations (advanced workshops focused on Research through Making) form a third pillar of the institute. The WdKA aspires to extend the offering of Master studies in alignment with the highly interdisciplinary and projected transdisciplinary development of her programs.

What does an education manager do?
The team of education managers at the Willem de Kooning Academy work on innovative, context-rich art education. Together they carry the responsibility for all aspects of the programs and their deliverance, with each of the managers having specific focus areas within their joint commitment.

Your focus will be on strengthening the research culture at WdKA by driving the implementation of the shared research agenda forward, surfacing and facilitating research by tutors and aligning research efforts throughout bachelor, master and eventually third cycle education curricula.

You will contribute to the public profile of the WdKA research agenda, through a variety of activities, positioning the WdKA research towards the current discourses on artistic and design research. In close cooperation with all members of the WdKA community you develop and organize engaging forms of learning and ensure and support their implementation in the curricula. You will become part of the network of education managers at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences contributing to the identity of the university and its key social position in Rotterdam. You will represent the WdKA within the Rotterdam University of Applied Science and on relevant national and international platforms of art and education.

Are you who we are looking for?
As an education manager at the Willem de Kooning Academy, you have demonstrable knowledge of and experience in contemporary art and design practices in art education. You recognize yourself in the interdisciplinary education of the Willem de Kooning Academy with its Autonomous, Social, Commercial Practices, and transdisciplinary practices through the RASL (Rotterdam Arts & Science Lab) program. You endorse these fluid areas of research and believe in the need to make new connections in order to enhance the value of art and design in societal contexts of change and transformation. You are an arbitrator, a leader and coach and ensure the balanced and durable growth of students and staff within a dynamic and socially safe academic culture. You inspire and motivate and go by the principle of valuing staff. You care for students and encourage them to participate in the transformative and adventurous process of learning.

At the same time, you are a critical thinker who is able to go beyond the prevailing norm and, for example, challenge normativity in art education through underrepresented and alternative theories and practices. You recognize the need to renew traditional training routes in the arts in order to better reflect the modern art and design practices the Willem de Kooning Academy aims to coach its students for. Based on the experience you have gained in education you recognize the importance of a well-organized educational program and of expert didactic team action by tutors for the development of individual students.

As member of the Management team, you will lead and represent the bachelor, master and research programs. You ensure pluriform notions of art and design practices, relating to the growing inclusivity of the WdKA as an institute. Within the community you lead and engage education teams in this institutional development. You are accountable for the educational environment and lead the work on continuous improvement with students and staff. You co-develop administrative, organizational and academic policies and lead their implementation.
