As substitute for a staff member on maternity leave Kunstinstituut Melly is looking for a

Curatorial Assistant

24 hours per week

The Curatorial Assistant at Kunstinstituut Melly will be responsible for the coordination of a number of art projects and exhibitions, especially those to be presented in the Summer and Autumn 2021, as well as assisting in the production of programming scheduled for the Winter 2021. This is a temporary, part-time position for six-months to substitute a staff member that will be on maternity leave. Supervised by Kunstinstituut Melly’s Director, the Curatorial Assistant will collaborate closely with the institution’s Curator of Exhibitions & Art Commissions and programs team.

We are looking for someone with good energy and experience in art and/or exhibition production. We are interested in bringing on a skillful organizer to our team; a creative, resourceful person who is curious and trustworthy; someone who has a strong commitment to the creation, presentation, and experience of contemporary art; and who can work with teams to help collectively and holistically coordinate scheduled projects and exhibitions, from proposal phase to their materialization and public outcome.

In this role you will:

  • Provide general curatorial support for the Curator of Exhibitions & Art Commissions; the Deputy Director; and, the Director; and as part of the exhibitions team.
  • Provide logistical and administrative support in coordinating exhibitions, including traveling exhibitions. Such includes procurement of loans, insurance of artworks, coordination of transport, and maintaining exhibition budgets.
  • Maintain communication with artists towards the establishment of accurate exhibition checklists, image files, lenders, and other exhibition deals.
  • Communicate with venue partners and organizers, guest curators, vendors and artists, and internally with curatorial, programming, and preparator teams to facilitate the building of an exhibition.
  • Develop project timelines and work with director, in-house- and/or guest-curator, deputy director, and installation teams in the completion of all phases of exhibition planning and execution.
  • Liaise with exhibiting artists in facilitating and coordinating the production and fabrication of new commissions.
  • Lead on the coordination of smaller-scale archival and collaborative presentations, in liaison with affiliated partners.
  • Help to create, coordinate, and edit exhibition descriptions and didactic materials such as wall text, labels, and newsletter and website content.

Skills & Qualifications:
Candidates for the position must be able to work in a team and have proven experience of at least two years in art and/or exhibition production and coordination; who believe in the importance of collaboration; and who respect the autonomy that participating artists and partners require while elaborating a project.

Practical considerations:

  • Considering the Coronavirus pandemic, the Curatorial Assistant may have to work mostly remotely (via email, phone, Teams, and Zoom), and on-site at the office and galleries if and when required and the situation allows. The Curatorial Assistant is expected to be flexible with this, and respect social distancing measures and safety protocols, as well as a balanced work-life schedule.
  • Kunstinstituut Melly works with national and international participants and partners on a daily basis. Dutch and English are the main languages of the workplace; candidates should at least have a strong command of written and spoken English.
  • Living in Rotterdam or the vicinity is essential to more fully enjoy being part of the team and institutional developments.
