You will bring along a vision on design led research and will undertake an appropriate balance of teaching, assessment, course and curriculum development and related administration. Our highly ambitious and versatile institution is currently in a stage of development and growth. The expanded pedagogical scope of the MIVC programmes has created new opportunities for interdisciplinarity and co-research within our existing course. Our distinct programmes of study in Visual Arts and Post-Contemporary Practice, Situated Design and Ecology Futures, investigate questions of contemporary culture, politics, media and climate degradation. Students work together to address urgent global challenges of the twenty-first century: migrant aesthetics, heterodox identities, the economics of production, emerging technologies, the anthropocene and the creative industries.
We support students by providing a learning environment for a transformative education, empowering them to become the new generation of artists and designers who will contribute in unconventional ways to transforming the complex and interconnected world we live in. By creating a unique educational environment, where the tradition of studio practices sit at ease with practices driven by ideas and context, and where artists, designers, and scientists together, through an interchange of ideas, create new knowledge to tackle some of the most pressing and challenging societal issues of our time.
You should be a design theorist and have a developing record of research. You will be a committed teacher and able to bring creativity, skill, enthusiasm to the delivery of the programme. You will contribute to curriculum development and delivery and add to the evolving research profile of our team. You will have strong experience of contemporary design and be familiar with theoretical and practical approaches to current social issues and able to develop knowledge frameworks that understand our entanglement with environmental, social and cultural factors. You must be able to facilitate a high-quality learning environment, communicate a broad range of theoretical design issues through hands-on teaching, workshop activities, lectures and seminars. You must be able to inspire and motivate students, to design activities appropriate at master level, and demonstrate experience of educational and administrative management.
You will have a Masters degree or PhD in Design theory, recent experience of HE teaching, and detailed knowledge of contemporary research and theoretical issues within the wider field of Design, as well as a developing research profile. The ability to demonstrate direct experience of one or more of the design fields and a connection to our thematics would be an advantage. The candidate we are seeking will bring knowledge, vision and industry network to develop new opportunities within the master programme.
- Masters Degree or PhD in Design Theory (or related subject)
- Recent Experience of HE teaching
- Excellent verbal and written skills in English
